Plan your trip

Set a departure time and allow a buffer before closing. HI

4. Research what is on your ballot

Research the candidates and issues on your ballot

Recommended timing: Before your chosen voting day.

Use the official sample ballot for your precinct and the November 3 general election. This plan does not list your personal ballot choices. K

Official tool: Find your official sample ballot

5. Go vote and bring your photo ID

If you requested a mail ballot

Recommended timing: Before you vote in person.

If you have not returned your mail ballot, tell the election official you requested one before voting. During early voting, that request alone does not require a provisional ballot. On Election Day, you will vote provisionally at your assigned polling place.

If you already returned your mail ballot, call the Board before voting in person. If you think it was lost, ask what to do next. JLM

Bring your ID and cast your ballot

Recommended timing: On your chosen early-voting day or on Tue, Nov 3, during the applicable hours.

Bring accepted ID; ask a poll worker for help as needed. On Election Day, stay in line if you are there at 7:30 p.m. ET.

You can bring paper notes, a voter guide, or a sample ballot to consult in the voting booth. Cell phone use may be restricted at your voting location, so check with the Board before relying on digital notes. EGJN

If your ID or registration is questioned, or you need the religious-objection process, ask an election official for help

Recommended timing: Before leaving the voting location.

Ask about provisional voting or, for a religious objection to being photographed, the affidavit process. GJ

6. Follow any official notices you receive

If you vote provisionally, keep your notice and check its instructions

Recommended timing: Read it before leaving and act immediately if follow-up is required.

Your provisional-ballot notice explains status checking and required follow-up.

If your notice requires a later photo-ID visit, see the Sat, Nov 7 deadline below. DJ

If your provisional-ballot notice requires it, complete your photo-ID follow-up

Recommended timing: Contact the Board immediately after voting.

Required later photo-ID follow-up: Sat, Nov 7.

Follow your notice and call the Board about when to bring your accepted original photo ID; a copy or ID number does not complete this follow-up.

Correction service: Wed, Nov 4–Sat, Nov 7, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. ET, while ballots still need fixes. The Board may return to regular hours when no fixes remain. Call to confirm your visit. DJ

Special Situations

This plan may not cover the rules that apply to military or overseas voters, hospitalized or confined voters, or people who need specialized assistance. Contact the Board about your situation; different procedures or deadlines may apply. Ask about authorized help if someone else needs to sign or return your ballot.
